From the incense burner resting in the palm of one's hand rises the faintest trace of fragrance.
Within the quiet moments spent attuning oneself to this invisible presence live the values long cherished by the Japanese people: tranquility, courtesy, dignity, and reverence for nature.
While photography cannot capture fragrance itself, it can reveal the hands waiting for its arrival, the silence of tending the ash, the palm gently cradling the incense burner, and the tension and stillness that fill the traditional room.
To give visible form to a culture that turns its heart toward the unseen is the purpose of this exhibition.
Through photographs, we present the gestures of the incense gathering, the beauty of incense utensils, the setting of ceremonial offerings of incense, and the living tradition of the Shino School as it is carried forward today by Souhitsu Hachiya, 21st Grand Master of the Shino-ryu School of Kodo.
We invite you to listen and embrace the profound passage of time embodied in Shino-ryu Kodo, the Way of Incense.
